As a guy who has chucked his share of leads in the round file, I completely support everything you've said. Timely followup is ESSENTIAL, but sales critters won't follow up if they think they're just spinning their wheels.

Uh-oh, time to consider a new toy. I almost bought the X61 tablet in December 2007. My goal was to use Dragon NaturallySpeaking to put the bulk of any text in place, and edit with my pen, rather than mouse and cursor. I ended up with the smaller, non-tablet X61s after test driving a Toshiba tablet. I think I had problems with obscuring the pen menus because I'm a lefty and hook my hand over when I write.

Dragon software transcription is almost magical to watch, but, as you point out, you have to be doubly careful to spot the inappropriate word hear and their. But I'm with you about working on the couch, even if I'm talking into thin air half the time.

You're right, Tom. It's interesting that start-ups who are outsourcing darn near everything else (as they often should) are oddly resistant to the idea of outside marketing resources. Consider it; it does not mean surrendering either control or direction. It just means having the well-staffed marketing department you wish you could afford.

My most recent blog on this thread -- "Treat Reporters Like Hungry Teenagers" -- (published on Aug. 20th) offers additional perspective on the important role of the news release. Let me know if there are any specific areas you might wish me to address further on this topic.
